Few experiences are as unsettling as feeling the solid ground quiver as
though it has turned to jelly, the buildings sway
and the pavements and roads crack and buckle. Such is the experience during
a strong earthquake. A Hindu mythologist would say that the earth is shaking
because a Sheshnaag, the giant serpent holding up the earth has woken
up and moved. The Japanese would connect it to a catfish or monster like
spiders. But scientists who study this phenomenon call it an earthquake!
How do they explain the quivering and cracking? Let's find out!
